Blessed be the Lord our God, Creator and King of the universe. God is my deliverance; I will be confident and unafraid. God is my strength, my song and my salvation. In joy we shall drink from the wells of salvation. God will rescue and bless our people. The God of all creation is with us; the God of Israel is our refuge. Happy are those who trust in God.
Havdalathe Sabbath service of separation
In Isaiah, and again in Revelation, we are transported to the temple of heaven, within view of the throne of the eternal One. The lightning, thunder and smoke of God's presence fill the whole temple. God has created four six-winged Seraphim to worship him tirelessly, ceaselessly and intensely. Just one of them singing shakes the threshold of the temple and moves its doors:
Isaiah 6:3 Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty His glory fills the whole earth.
Revelation 4:8 Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty who was, and is, and is to come.
They are joined by the elders
Revelation 4:11 You are worthy, our Lord, to receive glory,
honour and power, for you created all things when no thing existed. By your will and for your pleasure all is determined.
Falling before the lamb they sing a new song
Revelation 5:9 You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you redeemed for God from every tribe, language, people and nation.
You have anointed them kings and priests to serve our God and rule the earth.
Then countless angels loudly sing:
Revelation 5:12 Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power, wealth, wisdom, strength, honour, glory and praise!
Finally all creatures of heaven and earth sing:
Revelation 5:13 To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise, honour, glory and power, for ever and ever, amen.
Thank you all for coming. Receive these words of greeting by Paul:
Philippians 1:2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I thank my God whenever I think of you. 4 and every time I pray for you all, I always pray with joy 5 for your partnership in the gospel from the very first day up to the present. 6 I am quite confident that the One who began a good work in you will go on completing it until the day of Jesus Christ comes. 7 It is only right that I should feel like this towards you all, because you have a place in my heart, since you have all shared together in the grace that has been mine, both my chains and my work defending and establishing the gospel. 8 For God will testify for me how much I long for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus; 9 it is my prayer that your love for one another may grow more and more with the knowledge and complete understanding 10 that will help you to come to true discernment, so that you will be innocent and free of any trace of guilt when the day of Christ comes, 11 entirely filled with the fruits of uprightness through Jesus Christ, for the glory and praise of God.
Called to read Isaiah 61:1-2 in his local synagogue, Jesus launches his messianic ministry:
Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour... 21 then he said, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.
With these words Jesus publicly accepts and personally endorses God's messianic commission, appropriating it as his personal mission statement. The same great commission into which our Lord Commander, Jesus drafts every disciple, the whole body of believers, the entire church.
Matthew 28:18 All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
Mark 16:15 Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.
Luke 24:46-48 This is what is written:
Meshiach will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day. Hosea 6:2 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 You are witnesses of these things.
Acts 1:8 You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Apostolic statement:
2 Corinthians 5:11 And so it is with fear of the Lord always in mind that we try to win people over. But God sees us for what we are, and I hope your consciences do too. 12 Again we are saying this not to commend ourselves to you, but simply to give you the opportunity to take pride in us, so that you may have an answer for those who take pride in appearances and not inner reality. 13 If we have been unreasonable, it was for God; if reasonable, for you. 14 For the love of Christ overwhelms us when we consider that if one man died for all, then all have died. 15 his purpose in dying for all humanity was that those who live should live not any more for themselves, but for him who died and was raised to life for them.
16 From now onwards, then, we will not consider anyone by human standards: even if we were once familiar with Christ according to human standards, we do not know him in that way any longer. 17 So for anyone who is in Christ, there is a new creation: the old order is gone and a new being is there to see. 18 It is all God's work: he reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 I mean, God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not holding anyone's faults against them, but entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 So we are ambassadors for Christ: it is as though God were urging you through us, and in the name of Christ we appeal to you to be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made the sinless one a victim for sin, so that in him we might become the uprightness of God.
2 Corinthians 6:1 As his fellow-workers, we urge you not to let your acceptance of his grace come to nothing. 2 As he said, Isaiah 49:8 'At the time of my favour I have answered you; on the day of salvation I have helped you;' well, now is the real time of favour, now the day of salvation is here. 3 We avoid putting obstacles in anyone's way, so that no blame may attach to our work of service. 4 But in everything we prove ourselves authentic servants of God; by resolute perseverance in times of hardships, difficulties and distress; 5 when we are flogged or sent to prison or mobbed; labouring, sleepless, starving; 6 in purity, in knowledge, in patience, in kindness; in the Holy Spirit, in a love free of affectation; 7 in the word of truth and in the power of God; by using weapons of uprightness for attack and for defence: 8 in times of honour or disgrace, blame or praise; taken for impostors and yet we are genuine; 9 unknown and yet we are acknowledged; dying, and yet here we are, alive; scourged but not executed; 10 in pain yet always full of joy; poor and yet making many people rich; having nothing, and yet owning everything.
Father, we pray in the name of the son, that you will fill us with fresh anointing to advance the great messianic ministry of reconciliation in obedience to your commission to contribute labour to your harvest.
Doxology:
Jude 24 To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy. 25 To the only God our Saviour be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore, amen!
